Mandriva, the leading European Linux publisher, has designed and developed an easy-to-use LDAP directory management tool: Mandriva Directory Server (MDS). This server allows companies to administer their users and their access.
Mandriva has installed the Mandriva Directory Server on the Maizières-les-Metz site of the Arcelor Research division of ArcelorMittal. The steel group wanted to improve the operation of its IT system and strengthen its security.
ArcelorResearch is the unit responsible for the group’s Research and Development. ArcelorMittal’s five sites in Europe (France, Belgium and Spain) are committed to developing industrial processes, products and solutions for steel’s major markets: automobile, packaging and industry.
ArcelorMittal started from a simple observation: the IT systems of the group’s different units are not uniform both in their operating system and application. This complex configuration, common to many businesses, did not facilitate communications. In addition, ArcelorMittal wanted to improve security of data both in relation to access and long-term storage.
Mandriva Directory Server comprises the substructure of the identity management system, the directory service administration and the network
services management. Interoperable with Windows, Linux and Mac workstations, it can replace a Windows domain controller and is easily implemented inside existing
infrastructure, on the same lines as Active Directory or OpenLDAP. In order to easily integrate the IT system, Mandriva Directory Server combines many tools facilitating the activity of users. In consequence it is possible to build up the directory from external data sources.
We were immediately attracted by MDS because we were seeking a more flexible directory management solution than that proposed by Microsoft and which could
operate within our heterogeneous IT system. Mandriva provides technical support of a very high level and its developers can also be called on if the necessity arises. The MDS industrial solution permits a comprehensive control of the most critical processes of our organization,» explained Jean-Michel Philippe, Research Engineer of ArcelorMittal.
Its systematization enables Mandriva Directory Server to dramatically strengthen security. And the flexibility of its rights management offers
substantial granularity and administration delegation.
